BGYF Haka - Ngā taiohi o Te Wiremu

As part of the Billy Graham Youth Foundation we were gifted a haka by the New Zealand Police.  This is very special to us and we have been practicing with all our members so that we can perform the haka at special events as well as when we receive visitors.

You can check out the haka here.

In June Latu was inducted into Rotary Porirua, he is looking forward to having more opportunities to serve the community. Latu meets with Rotary twice a month at their meetings in the Porirua Club. Rotary Porirua is very active, getting involved in lots of community programs and events. They have a real focus on youth and therefore are very happy to have Latu on board.

Influential Wāhine of Porirua – Coach Nicole Robson

Lead Female Coach Nicole was nominated as an “Influential Wāhine of Porirua” and was chosen.
Nicole was nominated because of the contribution to positive change in the lives of the young wāhine in her charge at the Cannons Creek Boxing Academy as well as wāhine from local schools that she coaches weekly.
Nicole not only teaches our vales of "Respect, Responsibility, Compassion, Consideration, Kindness, Duty, Obedience, Honesty and Truthfulness" but she also lives them.
Nicole is not just passionate about wāhine, she is also a great role model for the teina at the boxing academy, teaching respect and empathy to all who attend. She is a great leader and role model, leading by example to the other coaches and staff at the Academy.
Nicole is a team player and she is always mucking in to get the job done.
As a reward for being chosen, Nicole was invited to attend the Miromoda Runway Show as a VIP guest. Miromoda is a spectacular night of fashion, showcasing New Zealand’s talented Māori fashion designers. Well done Nicole, you totally deserve it and the whole Academy is in your corner. outward bound NZ

If you haven’t heard of Outward Bound, it’s located in the Marlborough Sounds. They aim to help people reach their full potential through challenges in the outdoors. Outward Bound’s classrooms are the mountains, bush and waterways of this beautiful corner of New Zealand. Outward Bound is a non-profit organisation - Their aim is to help create better people, better communities, and a better world. People of all ages, cultures, abilities and backgrounds are welcome at Outward Bound. CCBA has been lucky enough to receive scholarships that are passed on to our youth that have been seen to demonstrate our values.Senior member, Romeo Te Paiho and Camryn Johnson (as pictured) have just come back from a three-week long course called “Mind, Body, Soul”.

working with schools

This year we have been working with around eight local schools, running programs for over 100 school students during the school day. We run these programs with our vision and mission in mind, “Vibrant, independent and responsible youth contributing to their community” and “Empowering youth to be the best they can be”. Sometimes we get out of the academy and help at the school. Recently we were invited to share in a hangi at Holy Family School to celebrate Matariki. We also spent a day planting trees at Brandon Intermediate, where we have been working for a couple of years clearing wilding pines and gorse to “bring back the birds”. These times of giving back to our community are important to us and work to strengthen our relationships.

boxing success

Of course, we are a boxing academy, so we have been doing some boxing amongst all of the other activities. One of our recent tournaments was the annual Naenae tournament. We had four bouts on the day and came away with three wins. This was a historic event, in that there were four Billy Graham Youth Foundation Academies competing at the tournament. Present was Naenae, Cannons Creek, Mid Canterbury and Wairarapa. We are looking forward to more opportunities to all come together in the future.

more member classes

We started a Senior girls’ class in the third term, this means we have 12 classes for members each week. We now have classes for all ages between 9-18 for both boys and girls. We have had over 200 members register with us this year, over 60 of those are girls, so we are really excited to expand to the Senior Girls.
Our coaches do an amazing job and are passionate about facilitating our youth to be the best they can be. We currently have five volunteer coaches who support Latu and Nicole.  Due to our growth, we are looking for more volunteers so if you know someone passionate about youth, send them our way.

tough guy and gal challenge

Latu and Nicole took nine of our members to the Tough Guy and Gal Challenge in Palmerston North. As you can see from the photo they all got stuck into the event. 😂 I have it on good authority that our group was the only one looking like they had been dragged through the mud rather than running through it. 👊😎😯

Lead Female Coaches Update

The first half of the year has flown by.  Fundamental girls are lots of fun and have an awesome bond with lots of laughs from their dad jokes.  Our Junior girls are looking strong and have progressed heaps with their press ups and core strength.  The new senior class has been awesome pushing their bodies to a new level. The girls are smashing their goals and looking like a force to be reckoned with.  I am very proud of all of them, Nicole.

passport to success

Many of you will know that our programs are based (at least in part) on our Passport to Success. The values in our passport are "Respect, Responsibility, Compassion, Consideration, Kindness, Duty, Obedience, Honesty and Truthfulness". One of the ways we encourage our members to learn our values is offering them “Life Membership” if they can memorize all of our values. As a life member, they can come to any of our academies for life and pay no fees ever. We currently have eight life members and many more of our members are on the journey, knowing one or more of the values off by heart.

The Warehouse Partnership

From the 1st August 2018, when you shop at the Warehouse Porirua store and purchase a bag, you can grab a token at the checkout that you can place it in the voting unit to support the work we do. At the end of January funds raised will be given to us according to the percentage of total votes. Don't forget to ask for a token. 👊😁
